Air Source Heat Pumps: what are they?

An air source heat pump (ASHP) is a highly efficient heating system that works by transferring heat rather than generating it, like a traditional heating system. They work by moving thermal energy from the air into the system similarly to your fridge but in reverse. Typically, heat pumps are more energy efficient than traditional gas or oil-fired heating systems and when working in conjunction with other renewable energy systems such as solar they can drastically reduce both your carbon footprint and energy bills.

Is a heat pump right for my home?

For the average UK household our heating accounts for more CO2 emissions than any other aspect of our lives. If we want to truly reduce our carbon footprint it’s going to be important we look to renewable heating technology that suits our home and our lifestyle.

A heat pump is an excellent alternative for most UK homes. Air source heat pumps are easy and less disruptive to install. The outdoor unit collects thermal energy from the air and converts it into usable energy to provide heating and hot water for your home. You will need clearance from windows and doors which our engineers can assess during a full heat loss and system design appointment.

Older homes can be suitable, but they may need upgrades to insulation and possibly larger radiators to work efficiently with a heat pump. If you’re looking to take the first steps towards an eco-friendly heating system ensuring your home’s heat loss and radiator sizing is ready for ASHP is an excellent start.

Newer homes, self builds and major refurb projects are excellent opportunities to design a heating system that not only works for you and your family but also the planet.

Grants and Funding

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government initiative that provides grants to homeowners and small businesses to help them replace fossil fuel heating systems with low carbon emission alternatives. In short, homeowners in England and Wales can apply for funding of up to £7,500 towards the cost of a new heat pump installation.

Who is eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?

There are a number of criteria you must meet to be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme:

  1.  The property must be privately owned by an individual or small business. This includes homes, businesses and properties that are rented out.
  2. You should be replacing existing fossil fuel heating systems, such as gas, oil, or LPG boilers, or electric heating systems (like storage heaters).
  3. The property should have a valid EPC, issued within the last 10 years.
  4. The scheme is designed for domestic and small to medium non-domestic buildings.
  5. The installation capacity of the system must not exceed 45 kWth.
